Educational Software
EDUCATIONAL TECHNICAL SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT (in Greek)
One of today’s, educational type, demands is the development of handy software based upon existing established scientific methods of analysis of the complicated processes related to the scientific fields of maritime hydrodynamics, coastal & port engineering, harbor works, maritime environmental engineering and physical oceanography.
In this framework, a series of ‘freeware’ computational applications was developed, concerning particularly monochromatic and irregular waves, sediment transport, storm surges, tsunamis, seiches and wastewater discharge systems design. Primary goal is the assistance of teaching and educational university staff in communicating knowledge on related scientific fields and the facilitation of students on the conception of theory and implementation of rather simple relative applications. Secondary aim is to help the work of scientists, engineers, consultants, researchers and professors, who are interested in acquiring quick and easy preliminary results and estimations on simple problems concerning the aforementioned scientific fields.
The educational software package provided concerns two courses of the educational program of the Civil Engineering Department, in the Faculty of Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki:
i) Coastal and Port Engineering (obligatory course, 7th semester)
ii) Coastal Works (optional course, 9th semester)
The basic link for download is: http://edusoft.civil.auth.gr/
The applications are in Greek language and are provided freely, for public use. They are built in Excel software, part of MS Office 2003, with the use of background code samples in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). They have been tested and proved to be compatible with later versions of MS Office too. Alterations and interventions in calculations procedures are allowed through the use of a password, which can be afforded by contacting the administrator in the following e-mail address: cmakris@civil.auth.gr
The applications are in regard to the following scientific and engineering subjects:
