thermaikos gulf | monitoring
description:
The general objectives of the 'Thermaikos' monitoring program were:
1. Gathering, recording and processing of physical, chemical and biological parameters as well as pollutants in the marine environment and marine organisms by monthly sampling.
2. Study of pathogenic microbial populations in the seawater.
3. Continuous monitoring and estimation of the seawater quality and the ecological sensitivity of the marine environment of the Bay and Gulf of Thermaikos.
4. Study of the potential occurance and evolution of extreme ecological phenomena.
5. Geochemical analysis of suspended matter.
6. Formulation of proposals for the optimum management and protection of the marine reciever.
The OCE group responsibility:
Monthly measurements of physical seawater properties in the monitoring stations of the Thermaikos Gulf.
The measurements were conducted using a Seabird-Electronics SBE19 CTD. Appart from standard sensors (Conductivity, Temperature, Pressure), the instument is equiped with Oxygen, pH and backscatterance (Obs) sensors.
